In July 2015, MECA Art Director Jos Sances and Lucia Ippolito created a 72" X 72" ceramic tile mural in collaboration with Shoruq, a community center in Dheisheh Refugee Camp, Palestine. Shoruq artist Ayed Arafah played a key role in the process and provided the Arabic writing for the border tiles.
The centerpiece image is based on the painting by the renowned Palestinian artist, Ismail Shammout, "the Wedding." Jos and Lucia conducted a workshop in Dheisheh to teach this innovative method of screenprinting on tile. About twenty artists attended the workshop some traveling quite a distance through checkpoints to participate. They created the border tiles that showcase the 44 destroyed villages where most Dheisheh families originally lived. Palestinians' right of return to their homes is symbolized in the mural by the house key. Many Palestinians still have their keys: treasured objects of hope passed from one generation to another since 1948.
