A valuable wood species, olive wood crafts (and oil) are an essential part of the Palestinian economy. Harvested from the branches of olive trees that have been pruned at the completion of olive-picking season, it takes a six-step process and 45 days for one piece of wood to become a beautiful piece of art. It takes six to seven years of training in order to become professional olive wood craftsperson.
The Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative, a certified fair-trade cooperative, founded in 1981, is based in Beit Sahour near Bethlehem and is working to alleviate poverty and to assist artisans in the marketing of products.
