UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS: INVESTING IN PALESTINE’S FUTURE
This print was created by Jos Sances, founder and Art Director of Alliance Graphics, to celebrate the work of the Middle East Children's Alliance for its 25th Anniversary.
“I’m a big fan of kids and there are few people working in pediatric dentistry in Palestine. I hope to, one day, join the dentistry faculty at the Arab American University of Jenin, where there are currently no women teaching in this field.”
--Ruba Abed, dentistry student at the Arab American University of Jenin
“When I finish school I want to work as a translator. I want to translate novels and I want to translate for people who come to visit Gaza and learn about our lives. I love to read novels. I like Charles Dickens and Dan Brown.”
--Beesan Abu Hameed, English Literature student at Al-Aqsa University, Gaza
The Middle East Children’s Alliance scholarship program began in 2003, when five students from Dheisheh Refugee Camp in the West Bank came to the U.S. to earn degrees.
For the last eight years, donations to the Ramzy Halaby Education Fund, the Elly Jaensch Memorial Scholarship Fund, and the Tree of Life Scholarship Fund--added to major funds from individual MECA supporters--have enabled talented and ambitious high school graduates to obtain degrees in Palestine and contribute to their communities and their country.
Each year the number of scholarship recipients has grown, with 150 students receiving financial assistance for the 2012-2013 academic year.
