Dawali Wall hanging with glass fish. Approximately 7 inches long.

Dawali is Arabic for stuffed vine leaves. Each Dawali wall-hanging is a one-of-a-kind, made from up-cycled scraps of leftover fabrics, and finished with a hand-poured glass pendant at the bottom. The fabrics that compose these pieces are unique and rare, ranging from local silks, to high-quality Kouffyeh scraps, to hand-weaved textiles that feature traditional and recognizably Middle Eastern patterns.

The Dawali is made by Haneen Project, which was established in 2007 as a result of Sunbula’s product development training in Balata Refugee Camp in the Nablus area, the Northern West Bank. A group of women who completed the training formed an independent income-generation project to support their families through sewing and embroidering work. Haneen is Arabic for Longing, and symbolizes the longing for Palestine’s ancestral homeland and heritage.

Sunbula, a Jerusalem-based non-profit fair trade organization, is a platform that supports marginalized women and communities in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and Palestinian communities within Israel through traditional artisanal crafts.
